10 THINGS – Miriam Morales

You’re originally from New York. When did you realize that you wanted to be in the entertainment industry as an actor?

I like to say that acting found me. It was like a God-given dream! I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to be an actor, ever since I did a church play.

Who were some of your influences as you started your acting career?

There have been so many people throughout my acting journey who were some of my influences. Acting wise, Rita Moreno, Lauren Velez, Meryl Streep, and Gina Torres are women whose work I’ve always admired. But, also my fellow classmates and teachers have all contributed in some way, to help my development as an actor and as a person. Every interaction is a lesson.

If you had the chance to work with anyone, which actors would be on your wish list and why?

Leonardo DiCaprio because he’s a chameleon and deeply committed to the character. Meryl Streep because, hello! she’s Meryl Streep! Viola Davis because she has this rawness and depth that is magnetic, and I admire her outspoken personality and truthfulness to her work. Lauren Velez and Gina Torres because growing up they were Latinas on the screen that looked like me who were strong, intelligent, and just so talented with a sense of grace in every character they portrayed. Really, the list is quite long!

You currently have a recurring role on Orange is The New Black. How were you first introduced to the project?

I was a huge fan of the show from the very beginning and instantly, I wanted to be a part of it. I visualized it and made it my business to remind my manager that I belonged on the show! LOL.

Obviously, the show is hugely popular among the fans. What was it about the script that excited you enough to take it on?

When I first learned about the audition, I didn’t get a script, just sides, which is basically a scene or two for audition purposes. But, having been such a fan of the show, it was a no brainer to go in.

On the series, you play the role of Pidge. What can you tell us about her?

Pidge is very loyal, feisty, and always down for the cause, especially when it comes to her friends. Her exterior is tough, but she has a big heart.

What are the good and bad sides of Pidge, and what do you enjoy most about bringing her character to life?

What’s good about Pidge can also be viewed as a bad characteristic. Her loyalty is a good trait, but it can also get her into trouble. I think Pidge has a sensitive side that is not shown too much. But, what I love about playing Pidge, is the opportunity to develop this character from scratch and truly make her my own. That’s exciting.

For those that haven’t seen Season 4 just yet, what can viewers expect to see from Pidge?

A whole lot of side-eye glances, toughness, and a comical side!

Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?

Oh, how I love fashion! This is another list that’s long. I love Badgley Mischka, Vivienne Tam, Rebecca Minkoff, Michael Costello, Christian Siriano, Chanel, BCBG, GIG Couture, Patricia Bonaldi. I recently fell in love with Shock and Awww. I can really go on and on and on!

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. What projects do you have coming up in the near future?

Thank YOU! Who knows what will come my way! I manifest a gritty indie film, a juicy leading TV role, and finishing my book. I have so many goals and I just want to do everything I possibly can to accomplish them.
