The holidays just ended, and baby, it’s still cold outside. But, it’s hard to ignore all of the Valentine’s Day décor and fresh Spring retail inventory that seems to force us, into getting ready for warmer weather, much too soon. Spring/Summer runways were covered in blush tones, watercolor florals, sheer mesh dresses, and crocheted bikinis. During this time of year, we like to focus on the trends that will smoothly transition us, from cool wintery layers and dark colors, to flirty spring dresses and open toed shoes.
Our favorite transitional trend this year is the school girl trend. Much more Cher from Clueless, than Britney Spears’ Oops I Did it Again music video, with a few “sexy librarian” adjustments. Just ditch the tartan plaids, mini skirts, and platform shoes. Opt for more lady like details like, mid-length skirts, blouses with ties, cropped cigarette pants, mod shift dresses, and Peter Pan collars. Here are a few more tips to help get you started:
- Keep your color story simple and minimal. Black & white work best. But, for a more feminine look, incorporate the color of the season, blush pink, or Marsala red and keep your silhouette girly with a skirt and sleek shoes.
- Incorporate a sophisticated print like houndstooth, and heeled combat boots. This will make your look, less girly and more edgy. Cool accessories will make this look chic and hip with a kick. But remember, all things in moderation.
- Lastly, modesty is key. The idea with this modern take on the school girl look, is to be sexy without showing too much skin. Button your shirt all the way up, or try an oxford shirt underneath a dress, and be careful with skirt lengths.
